This solo exhibition was an exploration of botanical labels and what they might be able to become without the limitations or existing expectations of academia. The work was rooted in book studies and displayed in the Lyman Plant House at Smith College.

 

My handmade paper included elements of each of the respective plants being labeled. Highlighting the materiality of the label as an art object while also taking on the role of a vehicle for conveying information.

Questions for consideration: What makes a label? What sort of information can or should a label supply? How is a label a means of visual communication?
